The North End Community Improvement Collaborative (NECIC) is looking for a passionate and hard-working Urban Farmer to join our team! If you love working outdoors, growing fresh produce, and connecting with the community — this is a great opportunity to help strengthen the North End through urban agriculture.
The Urban Farmer helps operate and maintain NECIC’s Urban Farm, Flourish Farm, NECIC Teaching Garden, and supports related programs — including the North End Farmers Market. This is a hands-on role managing production from seed to harvest, engaging with the public, and helping to grow NECIC’s urban agriculture efforts.
You’ll work closely with the NELFI team, Richland Gro-Op, and NECIC leadership to grow high-quality produce, maintain farm spaces, and promote food access in the community. This position requires a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, and valid car insurance, as regular travel between farm sites and the community kitchen is part of the role.
Manage farm production from seed to harvest to kitchen delivery
Lead high tunnel production, soil prep, planting, harvesting, composting, and maintenance
Prepare produce for packaging and distribution
Maintain inventory and equipment for Urban Farm, Flourish Farm, NECIC Teaching Garden, and Tool Shed
Help develop and maintain crop and marketing plans with NELFI and Richland Gro-Op
Support reporting for leadership and funders
Work with diverse community members — including youth, restored citizens, and incarcerated individuals — during classes, tours, and events
Coordinate and supervise volunteers, re-entry participants, and current inmates assigned to assist with farm work and special projects
Represent NECIC at community events, conferences, and farmers markets
Support setup and tear-down of the North End Farmers Market
Maintain farm properties (mowing, weeding, irrigation, basic repairs)
Promote the farm and market through marketing and social media
Environmental, farm, or garden education experience
Knowledge of crop planning, soil management, garden design, and farm equipment
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Strong problem-solving and time management skills
Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
Comfortable engaging with diverse populations
Able to work weekends, early mornings, evenings, and extended hours during peak seasons
Familiarity with Mansfield’s North End and ABCD (Asset-Based Community Development) a plus
Project management experience a plus
This is an active, outdoor role. You should be comfortable:
Performing outdoor physical labor throughout the growing season
Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs
Bending, squatting, kneeling, and standing for long periods
Working in heat, rain, cold, and uneven terrain
Operating tools, machinery, and equipment
Driving between farm locations (Urban Farm, Flourish Farm, NECIC Teaching Garden) and the community kitchen to transport produce and supplies
