In 2024, the NECIC Urban Farm launched a new composting initiative to help reduce food waste, support healthy soil, and bring the community together around sustainability. Thanks to support from the Ohio EPA - Recycle Ohio Grant Program, we’re proud to offer an easy, accessible way for residents to take part in this growing movement.
We provide free composting buckets for residents to take home and use for food scraps and plant-based organic materials. Once full, participants can bring their bucket back to the Urban Farm, empty it into our compost tumbler, rinse it out, and take it home to start the process again.
It’s that simple.
Fruit and vegetable scraps
Coffee grounds
Organic/Paper Tea bags
Eggshells
Plant-based food waste
Please avoid meat, dairy, oils, and anything non-organic.
Option 1: Register Online
Fill out our Composting Program Registration Form and we’ll follow up with details.
Option 2: Sign Up In Person
Stop by the NECIC booth at the North End Farmers Market any Thursday from 4:00–7:00 PM, fill out a form, and pick up your bucket to get started that day.
Once you're signed up, you’ll be eligible to drop off compost anytime at the NECIC Urban Farm: 311 Bowman St, Mansfield, OH 44903
Just head to the main gate, open the compost tumbler, empty your bucket, give it a rinse with the sprayer if needed, and you’re good to go.
All compost generated will be used to enrich the soil at the Urban Farm, helping us grow healthier produce for the community and educate the next generation of growers.
